This illustration depicts a scene in John Musick's book The Witch of Salem. Rebecca Nurse was accused of witchcraft on March 19 of 1692. Abigail Williams was seen exhibiting strange behavior and claimed Rebecca had tried to force her to sign "The Devil's Book". On March 23, Rebecca was arrested. Sarah Cloyce, Rebecca's sister, came to her defense which led to her own accusation of witchcraft. Rebecca was executed on Proctor's Ledge on July 19, 1692.

The Execution of Stephen Burroughs, C. 19 Century

On April 30 1692, the arrest warrant for Stephen Burroughs (i.e George Burroughs) was issued. Burroughs was a Harvard graduate who served as a minister of the Salem Village Church. Burroughs had moved to Wells Maine, where he was serving as a minister. On May 4, Burroughs was arrested. His granddaughter Margaret Jacobs implicated her grandfather of witchcraft. On August 19 1692, Stephen George Burroughs is executed by hanging.
